5 Chemical-free recipes for a sparkling home

by Irina Bosco

Love the feeling of a cozy, clean house but don't like to use chemical-infused cleaning products?

Here is 5 most popular natural cleanser recipes to use around the house.

1. All Purpose Surface Cleaner

  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon castile soap
  • 3-4 drops essential oil of your choice

Combine all of the ingredients in a spray bottle. Spray on any areas that need a good cleaning. The vinegar, which is antibacterial, will help remove mildew and mold.

2. Drain Cleaner

  • ½ baking soda
  • ½ cup white vinegar
  • Hot water

Pour the baking soda down the drain. Follow it with the vinegar. Let it fizz for about 10 minutes. Then pour a kettle full of boiling hot water down the drain. Repeat with more water if necessary.

3. Glass Cleaner

  • White vinegar
  • Newspaper

Spray some vinegar onto a glass surface and wipe it down with scrumped up newspaper.

4. Bathroom Scrub

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup castile soap
  • 1 teaspoon tea tree oil

Place the baking soda in a bowl. Slowly add the soap until the mixture gets thick. Add in the tea tree oil. Scoop the mixture onto a sponge or damp cloth and give your bathtub and sinks a good scrubbing.

5. Toilet Cleaner

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 2 cups white vinegar

Remember your primary school's science class? That's right: just scrub the toilet bowl with baking soda then spray the vinegar and let it fizz (the fun part). Flush the toilet and you are done!

Why every family needs a nitrate tester?

by Irina Bosco

Why fruit and veggies nowadays tend to contain increased levels of nitrates?

In a world where demand is high, farmers have to do whatever they can to grow enough vegetables to meet that demand. Sometimes, this leads to the use of nitrogen fertilizers, as it helps the vegetables to grow faster, but unfortunately, this can lead to unsafe levels of nitrate in the vegetables. Additionally, when vegetables don’t have the sunlight exposure they need, it can cause high levels of nitrates to occur. Nitrate poisoning can be a serious problem, and research has proven that it can lead to many health conditions, including cancer. Methemoglobinemia is a blood disorder that inhibits the distribution of oxygen throughout the body, and it is also caused by nitrate poisoning. Prevention is the best treatment! Ensure that you are providing yourself and your family with vegetables that are not only nutrient dense and safe to eat.

Numerous health professionals tell us to consume at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day but could this advise make us sick?

We all heard of the ‘5 a day rule’, however, it doesn’t change the fact that many of us don’t eat enough fruit and veggies. As a result, we miss out on the vital nutrients that keep us healthy. If you are looking to turn your health around, a great place to start is by adding more fruit and vegetables into your diet. However, some vegetables contain high levels of nitrates, and this can actually lead to nitrate poisoning. This doesn’t mean that you should stop eating your vegetables, but it does mean that you need to be cautious about what you eat. That’s where the nitrate tester comes in handy. It is portable, easy to use and gives you precise nitrate level readings in seconds.

What about cured meat products?

Cured meats and various smoked produce presents a special danger for nitrate levels watchers. Nitrates are added as a preservative and antioxidant.

Fresh meat normally contains low levels of nitrates. In the case of cured meat products, federal food safety regulations require the addition of at least 100 mg/kg of nitrate and nitrite, but not more than 200 mg/kg, during the preparation process.

Below is an example of 2 different cured meat products, both were found to have increased nitrate levels despite the fact that one of the products marketed as ‘natural’.

Deodorants - The new world of natural deodorants

by Irina Bosco

Deodorants. You have probably heard many-many times by now that ordinary deodorants & antiperspirants should be avoided at all costs as they are simply not good for you because they are loaded with harmful ingredients such as aluminium salts which clog sweat glands and get absorbed into the body. Aluminium acts as neurotoxin and recent studies suggest a strong correlation between systemic aluminium absorption and risk of developing health issues, such as Alzheimer's disease. It can also interfere with endocrine system function by mimicking natural hormone estrogen which had lead scientists to establish a link between breast cancer occurrence and use of aluminium based antiperspirants by those affected.

In my personal pursuit of natural, yet effective, alternative to antiperspirant, I have tried quite a few brands of natural deodorants and found that some work a lot better than others. In light of this, I would like to highlight two of my favorite brands ~ Schmidt and Woohoo! natural deodorants paste.

Schmidt natural deodorants & Woohoo! natural deodorant

Schmidt natural deodorants range comes in paste and stick (pictured above) formulations and Woohoo! natural deodorant comes in a thick paste.

I found both brands very effective in everyday use in controlling of perspiration and underarm odour. Instead of clogging the sweat glands these products help absorbing the moisture and preventing bacteria from causing offensive odours..While both brands work well for me, I find paste formulations work better in controlling perspiration in humid weather conditions or when exercising / sweating profusely. Stick formulations are great as everyday deodorant option. I have to note here that it could be a little tricky to get used to applying paste deodorant as you have to use your fingers, the same way you would apply a face cream.. but because paste is not at all greasy and rather powdery consistency (due to the arrowroot powder), the application technique is very easy to master.

Schmidt stick formulations come in a variety of fragrances and also as a fragrance free alternative.

Woohoo! paste has an intricate, unisex, botanical fragrance which I fell in love with.
